Bon courage.

I have met many people in the mafia in California. Most of them are worthless. What happened to Jaycee Duggard, the 11 year old who was abducted, was because of Phillip Garrido's mafia connections. They are in the DEA, metro police, and of course the docks. They have married the masons and are at least half responsible for the tyranny in this country. I will do whatever I can to rid this world of inhuman monsters like them. Bless you for your courage.

I've just spent two weeks in Sicily - it's a great place with lovely people, fab food and amazing sites/sights. I saw many of your posters explaining Addiopizzo and supporting producers who have not succumbed to mafia blackmail. You are doing a wonderful job - may your work become easier as people realise the importance of living free.
Joy - Melbourne, Australia

As you are having problems in the area of waste disposal, with the Mafia forcing people into a situation where they have to live with rubbish piled high in their streets with nobody to take it away, I have thought of a way to fight back. Hire a few trucks and take your rubbish to, the driveways of Mafia homes. Pile the rubbish high and block them from being able to drive anywhere. Make these bastards prisoners in their own homes! That will show them that the people are the boss, not them.

I read about the Addiopizzo campaign in "A New Way to See Sicily" in the May 6, 2011 edition of The New York Times. Bravo! It is important and brave, the stand against generations of bullying that you are taking. And I commend you. Here in America, we have a love of Mafia stories in television (e.g., The Sopranos) and the movies (e.g., The Godfather, etc.). But I had no idea that, in reality, the hold of the Mafia was so strong. I was struck by the statistic in the article that 70% of Sicilian businesses still pay the Mafia. That is such a high number! And before Addiopizzo it was even higher. What a shock. I'd always thought that Hollywood exaggerated the Mafia's influence to a great degree. I guess not. Best of luck to you and I look forward to visiting Sicilia in the not too distant future. Yours is a beautiful land. On one of our public broadcast stations here, I am able to watch episodes of "Commissario Montalbano" - set in Sicily. Love that show, and the books. Makes me want to hop on a plane and go, right now!

Hello I'm a student who work at college in UK. I'm working on the subject of mafia and racket in Italian lessons. I think of racket's phenomene is dangerous for people who want fight against mafia. In fact some shopkeeper payed mafia because they are scared and they can to denonce the other who don't payed. I'm supporting your association "addiopizzo" because your are helping people who fought, are fighting and will fight against racket and mafia in general.

You are doing the right thing. It is difficult to rouse people from their individual fears, even when the cause that they always secretly hoped for is strong. Even when it looks strong enough to prevail. And, sadly, especially at this time, cowardice and self-loathing can make a man turn to treachery. And this for no reward, only immediate sorrow and wishes for forgiveness. So, keep the crew uplifted, give everyone their due understanding of their being absolutely essential. Everybody should feel that they have something unique to do (even if it is just knowing that they have something unique to do). I say all this because of the immense importance that this has for you, your community, your country, our world, and, of course (stay humble) history. Be well, Mark Economos Scarsdale, NY

Only when 'the people' get sick and tired of being abused and ban together and rise up to fight against tyranny will they obtain freedom. They must not be concerned about their personal safety but put their childrens children first. At times the tree of liberty needs to be fertilized with the blood of patriots and tyrants. My family had to leave Sicily because of the mafia, having lost loved ones to their insatiable appetite for evil. God Bless the people of Sicily who are finaly fighting back.

Having lived in a free country all my life, I have always found it hard to understand that at this time in Europe's history, there are places where people would have to pay protection money to continue to run an honest business. Its a shame on Sicily and the Italian government and I hope that you and the people on the ground win this battle. If I come to Palermo again, I will certainly support you by finding out the places to stay and eat that are standing up to such intimidation. I read about you in one of our newspapers. The best way to spread your word is through the press. My best wishes for your efforts.

Italy can only survive if it fights back against those cowards the Mafia and Camorra. They are destroying Italy - to them money is more important than the country and the cities they inhabit - expose them so that we all know their names! And stop voting for their political protectors - the ghost of Achille Lauro lives on unfortunately.

I'll be visiting Naples via cruise ship soon. I imagine that most tourists, like myself, would support businesses who resist if they were educated about the issue. Have you considered approaching travel agencies, travel websites, travel sections in newspapers to let people know which businesses to support while on vacation? I tried to download the guide on your website, but the file is too big for Google to translate it.

I just finished reading J. Dickie's book about Cosa Nostra and it brought back memories from when I was a child/teenager in the 80's and TV pictures were showing the shootings and killings on the streets of Sicily. I also did my latest degree in Social Anthropology and I remember that one of my modules was about the family structure in Southern Italy and how members of families used to protect their law-breaking relatives as part of the family morale prevalent there. I think that the "Addiopizzo" movement is a great people´s action and I fully support it. Moreover I think that all the tourists that go to Sicily should openly support the local tourist agencies that don't support the Pizzo system.

I Honor the members of this Addiopizzo organization. Palermo, Sicily is to me a secondary Metro of the real Sicilian Arm of power, I wqould look into the Castellamerese and the Bonanno Family's shadow influence on the legacy and main power of the hidden empire if your Honorable Organization wants the real change your inspiring to deal with and make happen. I had the unfortunate personal experience of getting arrested in Tucson, Az in 1976 and with the Godfather Joe Bonanno Sr's reqeust he sent an attorney to my rescue in Tom Chandler. My first hand experience with the old Don and his stable of powerful Attorneys, CEO's, Juedges & Politicians uswe to make me feel I was on the top of the World, now 33 years later I see it as it was, total corruption. This is why the USA is in the mess on wall street to DC that it is. I will attend the April 27th seminar by Edourdo Zaffuto in Little Rock, Ar. and I am looking forward to hearing what Mr. Zaffuto has to say. Godspeed, Daniel J. Finley

Exposure of exploitation is everything. As a potential tourist to Palermo and Sicily, I would want to know that the economy I bring supports businesses standing up to extortion. I'm sure many others visiting your country would feel the same way. Use the internet, or find other means to list "pizzo-free" shops, restaurants and hotels, targeted towards a visiting audience. I think this would have a great effect.

I saw a show on Frontline and I was very proud of you. Even in Brooklyn, NY when I was opening a store, I had to worry about the "garbage route" pickup and I resisted them. I went with another provider. These people are just bullies and it should be alaways be illegal to pay them. I was just 26. The really should do this in the United States. In any community where any organized crime exists. How about this: life in prison for any extortion request. The next move is to stop them from influencing government. Ciao

Hi Barbara, I hope your trip went well. Last week a friend of mine returned from Italy and just coincidentally was telling me about her visit to Palermo. Hello Barbara - It was very nice to meet you on Sunday at Jan Kubic's house. You are a very impressive young woman, and I think your organization is terrific. I couldn't find the grant writing book I wanted to pass on to you - when I find it, I will mail it to you. In the meantime, I am going to give you two contacts to organizations that may either provide grants to NGOs like yours, or who would be natural partners for some of your projects. The first is the Open Society Institute of the Soros Foundation - www.soros.org - your organization will want to look at the goals and track record of this organization to see if it fits your needs. The Soros Foundation is a separate entity from George Soro's political acitivities, however, some people have concerns about his political activities, in particular his views on the legalization of controlled substances. If it isn't a view that affects your NGO, this might be a good source of funding for you. I am also including a link to the Order of the Sons of Italy in America. They do a lot of good work and may be a great resource for you. I am not sure whether they fund any projects in Italy themselves - even if they don't, their membership could be helpful to you. There are a lot of good websites that can help you put together a good grant - they are not that difficult. It can help to have a consultant or professional grant writer assist you, but it's best if your organization puts the grant package together for specific projects. Good luck to you in everything you do. The world needs more young leaders like you - Jennifer Martin

Cara Barbara, it was great to meet you in Washington DC last month...i hope you found your trip across the country both enjoyable and productive. As discussed, please send me any material you have on Comitato Addiopizzo -- i think it is a wonderful grassroots effort and would like to highlight it in some of our research & policy papers. As you may know, prior to my current counterterrorism, counter-radicalization, and homeland security research, I had written a number of reports and journal articles on transnational crime...it's great to learn that there are young people like yourself committed to improve our communities for the better and not simply accept the status quo. Keep doing what you are doing and i hope to see you again soon (perhaps in Sicily next time). If interested, you can find some additional background information (research, articles, testimonies, etc.) on some of our work at www.homelandsecurity.gwu.edu. Ciao, Frank

I left Palermo in 1976. It was a dirty, depressing, 3rd world city. I saw it again 30 years later: it had become clean, vibrant, European. I was shocked! I asked how it happened. They told me that it was our generation (the baby boomers) who had changed the city. I was proud of them. But not as proud I am of you, for taking over what I thought was an immovable force, the Cosa Nostra. More Power to you! Bravi!

"Pizzo" is a forme of abuse - just like child abuse or any other type of abuse - by inflicting fear of retaliation the mafia gets a certain behavior from these scared people - if you keep hitting a child to get it to behave a certain way it is the same thing. This abuse shapes the people, the entire population and unless somebody breaks this vicious cycle, the abuse will never stop. I wish you the strength to continue your rebellion. Stop letting anyone abuse you - because you deserve a life without abuse! Stand up for yourselves! Buona fortuna....

The Mafia should stick with what they do best. Drug trafficing and Piracy, and should leave small businesses and individual people alone. They should be thankful that govermenments everywhere have banned drugs, so they can make a decent living. So dont be greedy, otherwise goverments may turn on you, legalise and control drugs like alchohol and then you will have a serious income problem.

My name is Clarence Walker. I live in the United States of Houston Texas. For the last ten years,as an investigative journalist, I've written extensively about Mob/Organized Crime activity in the U.S. and foreign countries. I am elated to know Italian citizens has revolted against the Mafia demand for the 'pizzo' protection. Recent stories I've written about Italian Organized Crime can be found if you google these words: (1)American Mafia recruits Sicilian Mafia(this article was reprinted into a paperback book)(2) Special Report: Murder Cools off in Italy and other stories about the Sicilian Mafia. Later this month and throughout the year I will be writing other stories about IOC(Italy Organized Crime) in Italy; I am eagered to to make contact for interviews with OC experts, Italian investigators, prime ministers, and even members of the groups that oppose paying 'pizzo' to IOC Mafia. If you will, please send me a list of government and even media contacts. Welcome to the New Year and I pray my freind that all the prayers you prayed for in 2007 will come true and be all good for 2008. Looks like you are off to a great start. Thank you.

A message to the mafioso reading these messages. No doubt you are strategizing evil things. You really only have one choice. GET A REAL JOB! Bow out quietly and go away while you can! You are now in the eyes of the whole world now. These boys are held in the hand of God himself and the host of heaven is watching YOU! If you touch one hair on these boys heads, to do them harm, you will create instant martyrs and the enire world will come after you with a vengeance empowered by GOD himself.

GREAT JOB ! Another possible step is to get these business's using hidden webcams in their stores to take pictures of these thugs and force them even further into oblivion. Amazing how a simple thing can do so much! You are HEROES! I know many, many Italian people and most of them are great and good people. For to long the ame "Italian" has been associated with crime. I SAY LET THE NAME, "Italian" be associated with: "Brave and corageous souls who fight for freedom from criminals of any kind !" Lets make a new banner ; I AM ITALIAN! So in this sense let us all be ITALIAN now !

I am a full blood Sicilian whose great grandfather left Sicily to make a better life for himself and his family in America. He confronted the mafia after they tried to shake his brother down (his brother had a small produce stand). He told him to leave his brother alone and that he and his brother would not pay the pizzo. This was in the mid 1920's. He was shot to death in front of his wife and small children (my grandmother). I don't understand how people could be so ruthless and evil. I always found my Sicilian family and friends to be warm and loving. This one segment of society gives the rest a bad name. The Sicilians in America fought prejudice for many years because of because of these heartless people. I am proud that my great grandfather refused to give in to their demands. He died for something he believed in. The cost of freedom and the advancement of civilization often carries a price. I am proud of the businessmen in Sicily who are trying to make it a nice place to live. Congratulations on helping to make that corner of the world, my place of ancestry, a more evolved civilization.

This is a monumental movement and one I am proud to see the people join together and unite to end this idocy of paying someone not to do bad things. Here in my country we pay them to do the same things pretty much but we call it the IRS, and instead of pizzo, they call it federal income tax. Our orgonized crime boss is George Bush, he along with his family are just as big a criminal orgonization as your mafia. My grandfather (Salvatore Zito) came to the US from Corleone in the early 1900's and my grandmother (Concetta though now I forget her maiden name) was from Palermo). I still have family in both cities. My family in Palermo are my Aunt who moved to Palermo from the US many years ago with my Uncle (who has passed away) and had her family there so I have cousins and their families there. I don't know my family in Corleone though I did visit them many years ago. I pray that your efforts bring down the stranglehold the Mafia has had on the people of Sicily. Ciao! Congrats: You have been doing a great job. The only way to destroy mafia is destroying the mob bosses all, in the way they did it in my own country "Colombia" back in the 90's, They killed allmost every member of drug cateles, "they not only were dealing with drugs also they were kidnaping and doing pizzo to a lot of legitimate business" then the police listed their killing as resisting arrest with violence, It was the way Pablo Escobar was killed, !why may you ask! Because if you put them in jail they have money, they buy judges and they get free soon, just to continue with their enterprises. Same happen with the Cali Cartel, almost all it's bosses are death or a few "may be 3" are in prison in the U.S. for life without the possibility of parole. Conclusion: If is not way to extradite them to the U.S. where they get no change, kill them.. For a free world without intimidation.

My grandparents are from Sicily. They emigrated to Brooklyn in about 1907. They did so to escape the corruption and poor living conditions back home. They were welcomed to the U.S. by the American version of the mafia and 'pizzo' was demanded from them, here. They stood-up to the hoodlums and refused their demands and chased them out of their new businesses...The mafia are the folks who give us honorable Sicilians a bad name...in memory of my tough, Sicilian grandfather, Giovanni Gregorio Bonagiuso.

Twenty-five years ago I was mugged in Palermo by two mafiosi kids on a Vespa. Like everything else in life, such things as this, not paying the pizzo anymore, a dream by a couple of boys who pasted these "A whole people who pays the Pizzo is a people without dignity" stickers around the city, is now becoming a reality! Now hundreds and soon thousand more are standing up for themselves and saying "No more pizzo!" Perhaps now too, others from around the globe will also stand up for themselves and tell the Mafia the same thing, no more pizzo ... no more protection money ... no more Mafia! I congratulate each of you for standing up for yourselves and each other against Mafia. Let it be known too by all of us that sign this Guestbook and leave our messages of encouragement for you that you are in our prayers and that your success will bring peace and joy in each of your hearts. God speed!

No one ever said life would be easy. BUT how dare something think that they have a right to extort money from someone who is trying to make an honest living. These thiefs, goniffs and bloodsucking scumbags should and will bill jailed eventually as more people realize that it is not okay for someone to take their morals, dreams and selfworth away. I hope these so-called punk mafia costa nostra so called figures rot in jail and have the crimes that they have commited come back to them 1000 times. I would like to know where I could get some ADDIOPIZZO stickers
